Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer to join our dynamic product development team. This role is pivotal in enhancing and scaling our customer-facing website and registration flow, while also contributing to the robustness and scalability of our backend services. As a key member of a Scrum team working in two-week sprints, you will help deliver seamless, reliable, and scalable solutions that directly impact the experience of our families and partners. Your expertise will enable the team to innovate across the platform, ensuring high availability and performance as we grow.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and enhance new and existing features for our website and registration process, ensuring a smooth and engaging user experience.
• Scale backend services to support new feature requests and accommodate a growing user base, focusing on performance, reliability, and maintainability.
• Improve the reliability and availability of our platform and services, proactively identifying and resolving issues to minimize downtime.
• Maintain and optimize existing backend services, ensuring they meet evolving business and technical requirements.
• Design, expose, and maintain APIs and services for external consumption and partnerships, facilitating seamless integrations.
• Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Write and maintain a comprehensive suite of unit, integration, and end-to-end (E2E) tests to ensure code quality and system reliability.
• Participate actively in Scrum ceremonies, contributing to sprint planning, retrospectives, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Apply lean startup principles and the build/measure/learn process to iterate quickly and deliver value efficiently.

Requirements

Must-Have Skills

• REST APIs: Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining RESTful APIs that are scalable, secure, and easy to consume. Ability to create clear API documentation and ensure backward compatibility.
• TypeScript: Strong proficiency in TypeScript for backend development, leveraging its static typing and modern JavaScript features to write clean, maintainable, and robust code.
• Node.js: Experience building backend services using Node.js, leveraging its event-driven architecture and ecosystem to create performant server-side applications.
• MySQL: Solid experience working with MySQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and data integrity management to support high-traffic applications.
• DynamoDB: Familiarity with DynamoDB for NoSQL data storage, understanding its data modeling, partitioning, and performance tuning to handle large-scale distributed data.
• Redis: Experience using Redis as an in-memory data store and cache to improve application performance and support real-time features.
• Single Page Applications using a Modern Framework: Demonstrated ability to build and maintain single page applications (SPAs) using modern frameworks, with a focus on React. Understanding of frontend-backend integration and state management.
• Writing and Maintaining a Robust Suite of Unit, Integration, and E2E Tests: Expertise in developing comprehensive automated tests to ensure code quality, prevent regressions, and support continuous delivery.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Sequelize: Experience using Sequelize ORM to interact with relational databases, enabling efficient data access and manipulation through an abstraction layer.
• Docker: Familiarity with containerization using Docker, including creating, managing, and deploying containerized applications to streamline development and deployment workflows.
• Amazon Web Services (AWS): Practical experience with AWS cloud services, such as EC2, S3, and other infrastructure components, to deploy and manage scalable backend systems.
• React: Recent hands-on experience with React for frontend development, contributing to a seamless user experience and efficient UI component design.
